Black Rivers
Patrick Campbell
Tuesday 12 February : 7.30pm : Axis Studio

There was a land where wood became water, where the black river mixed with the white river, the white river with the black, and the people of the land toiled, separating black water from white water, white water from black water, water from water. And then the black called the white white, the white called the black black, the black called the black white and the white called itself whiter. And the black black whiter white black white people served up offerings of green bananas to a Primeval God, cursing them with his special banana.

Stuck in the ivory tower, trapped in the attic of academia, an English academic becomes possessed by his historical case studies. As he journeys along the Black River that leads to hell, he uncovers the underbelly of Western Modernity: the colonial scene.

Mixing theatre, song and storytelling, Black Rivers is the fruit of artist Patrick Campbell’s ongoing creative partnership with Carran Waterfield (UK), and his contact with the members of the Grotowski Workcentre (Italy) and Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium (Denmark).
